Love Fest ~ Enough Love

Happy Valentines Day!!! We made it, 7 Days of Love!!!

The love knot

This journey through the “love chapter” has unearthed more soul than I knew possible.  When I first read this chapter it felt impossible, an overwhelming expectation that I fell short of before my feet even touched the floor every morning.  I struggle to be patient with my kids when I’m tired and their needs are mounting.  I struggle to always trust when circumstances appear bleak, I don’t always hope when it feels hopeless, my perseverance tends to dwindle when no one else pushes forward with me.  I don’t think the best of others and would prefer to be first in line at Starbucks instead of give up my place for the person behind me.  All my feeble attempts at love have failed at being kind to others, not overtly (everyone can play polite) but covertly.  Covertly I battle jealousy, comparison, exhaustion, even fear.

I fail at love.  But love has not failed me.

“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.  This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has give us of his Spirit. …And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love, whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.  This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence…: in this world we are like Jesus.  …We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:10-19 (NIV paraphrased)

Brandon Heath captures it in His song “Your Love”:

I felt it first when I was younger, A strange connection to the light, I tried to satisfy the hunger;
I never got it right.
I never got it right.

So I climbed a mountain and built an altar, Looked out as far as I could see, And everyday I’m getting older,
I’m running outta dreams.
I’m running outta dreams.

But Your love! Your love. The only the thing that matters is Your love!
Your love is all I have to give. Your love is enough to light up the darkness!
It’s Your love! Your love.
All I ever needed is Your love…

You know the effort I have given, And you know exactly what it cost.
And though my innocence was taken…
Not everything is lost.
Not everything is lost!

But Your love! Your love. The only the thing that matters is Your love!
Your love is all I have to give.
Your love is enough to light up the darkness! It’s Your love! Your love.
All I ever needed is Your love…

You’re the hope in the morning.
You’re the light when the night is falling.
You’re the song when my heart is singing.
It’s Your love!

You’re the eyes to the blind man.
You’re the feet to the lame men walking.
You’re the sound of the people singing.
It’s Your love!

But Your love!  Your love.  The only the thing that matters is Your love!
Your love is all I have to give.  Your love is enough to light up the darkness!
It’s Your love!  Your love.
All I ever needed is Your love…

God’s love is enough – it is all I have to give.  All I have to give to my snot nosed three-year old in the midst of the melt down at the grocery store.  All I have to give to the friend crying over the phone over a heart ache in her life while my dinner burns in the oven.  All I have to give my relative when misunderstanding colors every cove of conversation.  All I have to give when hope seems lost and circumstances reek of fear.  God’s love is enough.

Love

Lord,

On this Valentine’s Day while the world focuses on the acts of love in a frenzy of roses and chocolates I pray Your love would invade every corner of my being.  May Your Love permeate my thoughts, my emotions and my expectations.   I don’t want to have love enough to give only one commercialized day out of 365 days of need, I want more of Your love in all my cracked and broken places so I can share it everywhere You need it to go.

May this Valentine’s Day be only the beginning of a life of worship, a life of love lived out loud in the midst of messy, vulnerable and therefore beautiful.

In your loving Name,

Amen
